1. Observations after first Ravens OTA viewing

The Ravens will finish up the first of three voluntary offseason team activities today, though they’ll do it outside the glare of the media. Yesterday was the one day for media availability, and while no big news came out of it, it was still good to see some action after so much attention has been placed on off-the-field stories over the past couple of months. Making any conclusions after a two-hour practice -- which did not include some of the team’s top veteran players, including running back Ray Rice, linebacker Ray Lewis and safety Ed Reed, and featured most of the players in jerseys, gym shorts and no shoulder pads -- would be foolish. However, I think it is appropriate to make a couple of observations:

3. Ravens' no-huddle offense a hit so far

5. Different season, same story with Ravens' confusing play-calling

— Here they go again.
— Here they go again. The greatest fear about this new, no-huddle offense returned in the Ravens 24-23 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday . I thought the Ravens were past this stage about questionable play...

7. Ray Rice on his quarterback: "This is Joe's offense"

After losses to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks in a span of four weeks last season, the outcry for the Ravens offense to run through Ray Rice was deafening, and the running back averaged almost 22 carries and more than four catches in the final seven regular-season games.

11. As always, Flacco ignores the pressure

The Ravens were ready to break the team huddle to start practice recently when Joe Flacco took off his helmet and his teammates erupted in laughter.

15. If preseason is any indication, Joe Flacco will be Ravens' biggest weapon

Unless quarterback Joe Flacco plays next week against St. Louis, he just completed the best preseason of his five-year NFL career.

17. New Ravens QB coach Jim Caldwell hopes to raise Joe Flacco's game

There was an assumption during Jim Caldwell's eight years as quarterbacks coach of the Indianapolis Colts that he didn't have much to do. By the time Caldwell arrived for the 2002 season, Peyton Manning was four years into what is now sure to be a Hall of Fame career and his numbers were already impressive for a young NFL quarterback.

19. Tyrod Taylor downplays notion he has edge in backup QB battle

If the Ravens’ plan for inserting their backup quarterbacks plays out as it has in training camp and according to the depth chart, Tyrod Taylor will likely get the first opportunity to succeed starter Joe Flacco in the team’s preseason opener at the Atlanta Falcons.

21. Caldwell's communication skills key to his contribution to Ravens

As football coaches go, Ravens quarterback coach Jim Caldwell is distinctively approachable, easy to talk to. For all the mechanical tinkering expected from Peyton Manning's former quarterback guru, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco said it's the ability to communicate with Caldwell that has had the biggest impact in training camp so far.

23. Curtis Painter OK with limited number of reps in camp

With four quarterbacks on the Ravens' roster, the number of balls they get to throw in training camp can be a premium. That seems to be the case with Curtis Painter, who has gotten fewer snaps than starter Joe Flacco and Tyrod Taylor -- Painter’s primary competition to back up Flacco. But Painter, who made eight starts with the Indianapolis Colts last season, said he’s not fretting about his playing time in camp.
