1. Observations after first Ravens OTA viewing

The Ravens will finish up the first of three voluntary offseason team activities today, though they’ll do it outside the glare of the media. Yesterday was the one day for media availability, and while no big news came out of it, it was still good to see some action after so much attention has been placed on off-the-field stories over the past couple of months. Making any conclusions after a two-hour practice -- which did not include some of the team’s top veteran players, including running back Ray Rice, linebacker Ray Lewis and safety Ed Reed, and featured most of the players in jerseys, gym shorts and no shoulder pads -- would be foolish. However, I think it is appropriate to make a couple of observations:

  3. Joe Flacco's focus is on field and Ravens teammates, not contract status

Joe Flacco took a couple of steps to his right, spotted Ed Dickson about 10 yards down the field and lofted a pass between two defenders that the young tight end hauled in.

From contract negotiations with quarterback Joe Flacco and running back Ray Rice to a potentially season-ending Achilles injury to star linebacker Terrell Suggs to coach John Harbaugh’s comments on the New England Patriots to mercurial safety Ed Reed’s controversial radio interviews, the Ravens have made plenty of off-the-field news this offseason.

  13. Ravens Q&A with Mike Preston

J.: Great overall game by the players and coaches against the Colts, but I do have one question. Coming out in the second half, the Ravens seemed to be more concerned and content with running the ball up the middle and trying to drain the clock. At this point in the season, why wouldn't they try to at least get another quick score to provide a nice cushion, and then give Tyrod Taylor an entire quarter of football to get his feet wet? We all know it only takes one play to lose a starting QB in this league, and it would seem to me that giving our rookie backup QB some real game experience might pay off in the games that lie ahead.

  15. Suggs not interested in personal awards, just 'football immortality'

It's been difficult to come up with new and interesting ways to describe the effect Terrell Suggs is having on opposing teams this year, but John Harbaugh might have managed to boil the praise of Suggs down to succinct perfection on Sunday.

  17. Use of fullbacks shows how Colts have changed offensively

INDIANAPOLIS -- Jerome Felton grew up in Madison, Tenn., less than an hour’s drive from Knoxville. So it’s not surprising he was a fan of the University of Tennessee and its All-American quarterback or that when Peyton Manning moved on to the Indianapolis Colts, Felton began keeping a close eye on them.

  19. Looking at how Ravens coordinators fared elsewhere

Now-former Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano accepted an offer Wednesday to become the next coach of the Indianapolis Colts. He replaced Jim Caldwell, who was fired after the Colts went 2-14 this past season. Pagano, who was the defensive coordinator for one season, is tasked with getting the Colts, who have the No. 1 pick in April’s draft and Pro Bowl quarterback Peyton Manning (in limbo), back to the playoffs.

  21. How did Joe Flacco fare when pressured?

For Thursday’s newspaper, I began a three-part series called “Tweaking the Ravens” and I started by tweaking the offense.
