1. Ravens news and notes after second OTA

I feel like I have to preface every one of these post-OTA observation blogs by offering the reminder that drawing any conclusions from these workouts would be foolish on my part. Still, some players clearly make a bigger impression than others and I can say without hesitation that nobody stood out more in yesterday’s session than second-year wide receiver LaQuan Williams. First of all, conditioning was not the issue for him, but Williams looks even leaner and much more explosive than he did during his rookie season. And during drills, Williams showed great speed and tremendous hands, even making a one-handed catch in traffic at one point on a Joe Flacco pass. Williams also beat Lardarius Webb on a couple of occasions along the sideline. With 12 receivers on the Ravens’ roster and the addition of several accomplished special teams players, Williams likely faces another uphill battle to make the team. But something tells me that’s just the way he wants it and he’s more than up for the challenge.

3. New defensive coordinator Dean Pees says Ravens can overcome injury to Terrell Suggs

Dean Pees has been through this before.
Dean Pees has been through this before. He was the linebackers coach for the New England Patriots when he learned that Tedy Bruschi, a Pro Bowl middle linebacker and one of the team's emotional leaders, had a stroke, putting both his 2005 season and...

5. Ravens players missing OTAs is just not a big deal

Can everyone just chill about all the Ravens missing from this week's OTAs?
Can everyone just chill about all the Ravens missing from this week's OTAs? Yes, there are some prominent names missing. Future Hall of Famers Ray Lewis and Ed Reed elected not to show up, which is a dog-bites-man story, since they hardly ever show at...

7. Last year's Ravens rookies finally get their offseason coaching

The season was a whirlwind for the Ravens' 2011 class of rookies.
The season was a whirlwind for the Ravens' 2011 class of rookies. It swept them up when the NFL lockout ended last July and dropped them at The Castle in Owings Mills a day later for their first training camp. It carried them through a 12-4 season all...

11. Observations after first Ravens OTA viewing

The Ravens will finish up the first of three voluntary offseason team activities today, though they’ll do it outside the glare of the media. Yesterday was the one day for media availability, and while no big news came out of it, it was still good to see some action after so much attention has been placed on off-the-field stories over the past couple of months. Making any conclusions after a two-hour practice -- which did not include some of the team’s top veteran players, including running back Ray Rice, linebacker Ray Lewis and safety Ed Reed, and featured most of the players in jerseys, gym shorts and no shoulder pads -- would be foolish. However, I think it is appropriate to make a couple of observations:

13. More on the Ravens' competition at left guard

Many of the eyes Wednesday at the Ravens’ first organized team activities (OTA) workout that was open to the media were fixated for a decent chunk of practice on the team’s offensive line. Team officials had identified that area as one they would like to improve this offseason, and they have attempted to do so by spending a pair of draft picks on linemen, Kelechi Osemele (second round) and Gino Gradkowski(fourth).

17. 11 players to watch at Ravens OTAs this week

The Ravens began organized team activities Tuesday, marking the first time this offseason that the team's rookies have been on the practice field with veterans. These workouts at the team’s facility in Owings Mills are optional for veterans, though I'm sure coach John Harbaugh hopes all of them will be in attendance. The OTAs will continue into June, setting the table for next month's mandatory minicamp.

19. Ravens: Looking at five questions during OTAs

From contract negotiations with quarterback Joe Flacco and running back Ray Rice to a potentially season-ending Achilles injury to star linebacker Terrell Suggs to coach John Harbaugh’s comments on the New England Patriots to mercurial safety Ed Reed’s controversial radio interviews, the Ravens have made plenty of off-the-field news this offseason.

21. Osemele, Gradkowski focus on guard at Ravens minicamp

Kelechi Osemele and Gino Gradkowski were drafted by the Ravens, in part, because of their ability to play multiple offensive line positions, but they spent the majority of the minicamp at guard. Both rookies will compete with Jah Reid for the vacant starting lineup spot at left guard.

23. Even in the offseason, the Ravens are giving back

The Ravens don’t play their first preseason game until three months from now, and veteran players aren’t obligated to be in Baltimore until a mandatory minicamp next month. But that hasn’t stopped many of the players from taking an active role in the community during their downtime this offseason. Matt Birk’s charity event on Monday night was a great example.
