The cars didn't endure (Halas had to sit on a running board because there weren't enough chairs) but the football dream did. Halas was working for the Decatur corn products company of A.E. Staley, who encouraged Halas and the Decatur Staleys were formed in 1920. Halas, who played baseball for the New York Yankees before a career-ending hip injury, played for the Staleys and moved the team to Chicago in 1921; a Cubs fan, he chose "Bears" for the name because it was a ferocious grown-up of his favorite team. Halas coached the team at four different times, guiding them to three NFL championships in the 1940s and another in 1963. His win total of 324 was the NFL record until Don Shula eclipsed it in 1993. Halas died Oct. 31, 1983, a year after bringing back Mike Ditka to coach his beloved creation.
