George Halas

A charter member of Pro Football's Hall of Fame, Papa Bear is generally credited with founding not only the Bears but also the NFL. He convened a group of a dozen men interested in forming a new league, meeting in a car dealership selling Hupmobiles and Jordans in Canton, O. A charter member of Pro Football's Hall of Fame, Papa Bear is generally credited with founding not only the Bears but also the NFL. He convened a group of a dozen men interested in forming a new league, meeting in a car dealership selling Hupmobiles and Jordans in Canton, O. The cars didn't endure (Halas had to sit on a running board because there weren't enough chairs) but the football dream did. Halas was working for the Decatur corn products company of A.E. Staley, who encouraged Halas and the Decatur Staleys were formed in 1920. Halas, who played baseball for the New York Yankees before a career-ending hip injury, played for the Staleys and moved the team to Chicago in 1921; a Cubs fan, he chose "Bears" for the name because it was a ferocious grown-up of his favorite team. Halas coached the team at four different times, guiding them to three NFL championships in the 1940s and another in 1963. His win total of 324 was the NFL record until Don Shula eclipsed it in 1993. Halas died Oct. 31, 1983, a year after bringing back Mike Ditka to coach his beloved creation.  « Show less

  1. Streak for the ages

    Sun Staff
It was only a 3-yard pass, hardly worth watching on a highlights film. John Unitas, the Colts' rookie quarterback, flipped the ball to his tight end, who fell into the end zone. The play averted a Baltimore shutout. It also provided a glimpse of a...

  3. Pro Football Hall fumbles in shunning of Modell

THE ABSENCE OF Ravens owner Art Modell's name from the list of 15 finalists for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003 was expected. There is still too much passion and, in some cases, disdain when his name is mentioned. It's a shame....

  7. Anatomy of a Front Page

Thrown together by time and a newspaper's front page, two disparate events can become related. Forty-five years ago, a horrific flash fire killed three Apollo 1 astronauts on the launch pad, the worst disaster to that date for the nascent U.S. space program. And closer to home, Chicago was walloped by the worst snowstorm ever recorded in the area. It paralyzed the city with 23 inches of snow and killed more than 60 people. Both events dominated the news for days, but the aftermath of the Great Snowstorm of 1967 remained Page One news for nearly two weeks.

  13. 175 years of memorable, horrible, humorous and remarkable events that shaped Chicago

<b>How do you explain the failures of Caleb Hanie? Was it that management misevaluated him and he just does not have the ability?
