9. Many reasons for Ravens' struggling run defense

Ravens defensive end Pernell McPhee simultaneously furrowed his brow, shook his head and frowned.

11. Mike Preston: Pees making right call to move to press box

Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees is making a smart move by calling his defenses from the press box instead of being on the field.
The Baltimore Sun
Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees is making a smart move by calling his defenses from the press box instead of being on the field. I can understand each method -- staying on the field or up in the press box -- but the Ravens have a lot of young...

13. Pernell McPhee on mission to catch teammates in race to become starter

Pernell McPhee’s participation in his third consecutive day of practice Friday is a positive sign for the Ravens’ second-best sack artist from a year ago. But after knee surgery shelved him for the team’s mandatory minicamp in June and forced him to watch the first five days of training camp from the sidelines, the second-year defensive end conceded that he is trailing his teammates in his quest to succeed Cory Redding as a starter.

15. Arthur Jones easing back into competition

When Cory Redding left the Ravens to join former defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano with the Indianapolis Colts, conventional wisdom suggested that Pernell McPhee and Arthur Jones would be competing for the right to be the starting defensive end.

17. Replacing others not part of Haloti Ngata's job description

The Ravens lost two defensive starters in outside linebacker Jarret Johnson and defensive end Cory Redding and will be without outside linebacker Terrell Suggs, a five-time Pro Bowler and the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, for a good portion of the upcoming season.

19. How will absences impact the Ravens' run defense?

The Ravens have been ranked in the top 10 against the run in 12 of the last 13 years and in the top five for six consecutive seasons. But with the unit losing a pair of outside linebackers in Terrell Suggs (torn right Achilles tendon) and Jarret Johnson (free agent who departed for the San Diego Chargers) who were often overlooked for their ability to force opposing running backs to the middle of the defense, can the defense continue that strong tradition?

21. Ravens news, notes and opinions

With the Ravens’ defense uncharacteristically struggling through the first four weeks, there has been plenty of finger pointing from fans and the media. Cornerbacks Cary Williams and Jimmy Smith have caught a lot of the blame and outside linebackers Paul Kruger and rookie Courtney Upshaw have received their share as well. But one guy that hasn’t gotten a lot of criticism – at least that I’ve heard – is Pernell McPhee. Big things were expected out of the second-year defensive end who was second on the Ravens last year with six sacks and led all Ravens’ rookies with 23 tackles in a part-time role. After the departure of Cory Redding, McPhee stepped into a starting spot but there has yet to be a spike in his production. Through four games, McPhee has a half sack and nine tackles. He was credited with two quarterback hits in last Thursday’s victory over the Cleveland Browns, so perhaps that’s a good sign. The Ravens badly need to get a pass rush from their front four, or specifically from somebody other than Haloti Ngata. Some of that falls on McPhee and the Ravens could also use a little more out of defensive end Arthur Jones and nose tackle Terrence Cody in their roles as well.

23. Haloti Ngata filling in Terrell Suggs' role as pass-rush specialist

A generous amount of doubt surfaced regarding the effectiveness of the Ravens pass rush due to the continuing absence of outside linebacker Terrell Suggs, but no one can blame Haloti Ngata for not doing his part.
