1. Ravens news, notes and opinions

The common conclusion from the Ravens’ decision to re-sign Bryant McKinnie was that the organization wasn’t yet comfortable with the idea of Kelechi Osemele starting at left tackle. I’m sure there is plenty of truth to that even though team officials suggest that’s not the case. However, the reason why the McKinnie move was a no-brainer – at least in my mind – was that the Ravens couldn’t risk potentially weakening two positions along the offensive line. Osemele may very well develop into a quality left tackle in the NFL. However, who replaces Osemele at left guard? Osemele was dominant at times when he moved from right tackle to left guard for the playoff run. Could Jah Reid play at that high of a level? How about Ramon Harewood or fifth-round draft pick Rick Wagner? The Ravens’ offense made too many strides last year to start the coming season with a completely new pairing on the left side of the offensive

  7. Newsome undaunted by roster turnover, focusing on plan in place

The conversations didn’t just start in the aftermath of the Ravens’ victory in Super Bowl XLVII. They actually began four months earlier when Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome, owner Steve Bisciotti and coach John Harbaugh started to meet and plan for 2013 and beyond.

  11. Ravens news, notes and opinions on Ayanbadejo, Thompson, Te'o and more

I mentioned this on my Twitter account, but I wanted to go into a little more detail here. Eight of the nine oldest Ravens – and the six oldest overall - from the team that won the Super Bowl two months ago are no longer under contract with the team. That group includes Ray Lewis (37, retired), Bobbie Williams (36, released), Matt Birk (36, retired), Brendon Ayanbadejo (36, will be released), Ed Reed (34, signed with Houston), Ma’ake Kemoeatu (34, free agent), Bryant McKinnie (33, free agent) and Anquan Boldin (32, traded to San Francisco). The only exception is cornerback Chris Johnson, the 33-year-old who re-signed with the Ravens last month. Johnson and fullback Vonta Leach (31) are currently the two oldest players on the team and the only players on the roster over the age of 30.

The Ravens said a month ago they wanted to strengthen the middle of their defense after winning the Super Bowl. They left out the part about letting more than half of their starting defenders go to accomplish that goal.

  21. Texans send owner's jet to pick up Ed Reed

If there was any lingering doubt that Ed Reed was intent about testing the free agent market and leaving the only NFL organization he’s ever known, it should have been erased Thursday afternoon when the long-time Ravens safety stepped off a plane adorned with a Houston Texans’ logo.
