1. Ravens news, notes and opinions

The common conclusion from the Ravens’ decision to re-sign Bryant McKinnie was that the organization wasn’t yet comfortable with the idea of Kelechi Osemele starting at left tackle. I’m sure there is plenty of truth to that even though team officials suggest that’s not the case. However, the reason why the McKinnie move was a no-brainer – at least in my mind – was that the Ravens couldn’t risk potentially weakening two positions along the offensive line. Osemele may very well develop into a quality left tackle in the NFL. However, who replaces Osemele at left guard? Osemele was dominant at times when he moved from right tackle to left guard for the playoff run. Could Jah Reid play at that high of a level? How about Ramon Harewood or fifth-round draft pick Rick Wagner? The Ravens’ offense made too many strides last year to start the coming season with a completely new pairing on the left side of the offensive

  3. Coffee Companion (12/4): your daily Ravens fix

Every morning, Monday through Friday, blogger Matt Vensel will hook you up with reading material -- mostly on the Ravens but with some other Baltimore sports stuff, too -- to skim through as you slug down coffee and slack off at the start of your workday. That way he’ll have an excuse to do the same to start his workday, too.

  7. Who is left out on the NFL's free agent market?

Two weeks out from their first practice of training camp, the Ravens have just $606,858 available under the salary cap if they hope to, as they seem to do every year, acquire a key veteran before the start of this season. Of course, they could potentially free up more wiggle room by negotiating a long-term extension with running back Ray Rice or by releasing a pricey veteran this summer (maybe Bryant McKinnie, as NFL.com speculates?).

  9. Game 11: Ravens defense dominant in 16-6 win over 49ers

When it was all over, after he had received not one but two celebratory Gatorade showers befitting of a 16-6 victory over one of the NFL's best teams, Ravens coach John Harbaugh jogged across the field and pulled his younger brother in for an embrace, and some kind words.

At the NFL Scouting Combine late last month, Ravens coach John Harbaugh acknowledged something that was probably pretty obvious to anybody even remotely familiar with the team’s salary cap situation.

Each week, when Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb shows up to do his radio show at the Al Packer Ford dealership in White Marsh, fans eagerly await, the majority of them hungry to get his autograph. During commercial breaks, they stand in line until it's their turn to shuffle forward and enthusiastically thrust a football, a picture, a jersey or a hat into his hands.

  23. With Derrick Mason gone, the Ravens get a chance to upgrade

The not-yet-official release of veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason opened the possibility of the Ravens making a play for one of the bigger-named wideouts on the free-agent market. Mason is in the twilight of his career, but his ego has shown no signs of decline. As we saw last season, there are only so many balls to go around, and when they aren’t going to Mason's side of the field, he will freely voice his displeasure.
