Bowden coached the Seminoles to the national championship in 1993 and 1999, when the Seminoles finished the season unbeaten. From 1987 through 2000, Bowden's team finished every season ranked among the top 5 in the final Associated Press top 25 poll. Bowden earned induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006. The field at Florida State's Doak Campbell Stadium is named after Bowden, and there is a statue in his likeness outside the Moore Athletics Center, which is the headquarters of the FSU athletic department.
Aside from his coaching success, Bowden is known for his warm and gregarious personality, and for his Southern style, which is reflected in some of his trademark colloquialisms such as "dadgum it."
