Alex Hawkins, irreverent, rugged Captain Who? of 1960s Colts, dies at age 80

Captain Who? is dead.

Alex Hawkins, a Colts running back and wide receiver who played for two NFL championship teams in Baltimore, died Sept. 12 at a nursing facility near his home in Denmark, S.C. He was 80.

“He’s happy now,” Hawkins’ wife, Charlie, said Wednesday. A hard-tackling, fun-loving player from West Virginia, Hawkins suffered from dementia.

He was frisky to the end, she said. Two days before his death, Hawkins greeted her arrival in his fun-loving way.

“He said, ‘You look so pretty, come get in bed with me,’ ” said Charlie Hawkins, 77.

That he lived this long, given his free-spirited past, would have surprised her...
