  1. Jim Parker flattened opponents, paving way for Colts to win titles

<a href=&quot;/bal-lennymoore,0,4892909.storygallery">Lenny Moore</a> can hardly attend an NFL function without some gnarly old linebacker wagging his finger at the 78-year-old Baltimore Colts Hall of Fame running back and telling Moore something he already knows.

  3. 'Greatest' came from NFL's best

On Dec.28, 1958, the NFL's best offense and defense, its finest quarterback, its best possession receiver and big-play threat, its most dominant defensive lineman and prototype offensive tackles, its best-rounded linebacker and its most promising...

  5. Colts great 'blocked out the sun' and rushers, too

    Sun Staff
His crushing blocks launched Lenny Moore's runs and saved John Unitas' skin. Jim Parker, the Hall of Famer who anchored the Baltimore Colts' offensive line during the club's glory years, died yesterday of congestive heart failure and kidney disease at...

  7. Toughest Colt lifted up a city

    Sun Columnist
It must have been a blind-side tackle that took John Unitas yesterday. The man who made Sudden Death part of the American language would have headed downfield in that determined crablike scuttle of his if he had seen the real thing coming. Anybody could...

  9. Streak for the ages

    Sun Staff
It was only a 3-yard pass, hardly worth watching on a highlights film. John Unitas, the Colts' rookie quarterback, flipped the ball to his tight end, who fell into the end zone. The play averted a Baltimore shutout. It also provided a glimpse of a...

  11. For ex-Colt Mackey, Hall was worth the wait

    Sun Columnist
An autograph-seeker approached John Mackey, the 10th former Baltimore Colt to achieve the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He obliged, adding his jersey number, 88, and a team identity -- Colts. The youngster said he regretted the Colts had such a bad year....

  13. Urlacher and Bears must reach understanding

    This is how ugly starts.
This is how ugly starts. The aging star has one year left on his contract. He wants a new deal. The team doesn't want to give him one. He talks up the merits of free agency. Next thing you know, Brian Urlacher is a Cardinal. Or a Seahawk. Or a...

  15. Reader Q&A: Dan Pompei's Bears mailbag

<b>Considering that Matt Forte is having a career year and is being paid chickenfeed by NFL standards and is at risk for a career-ending play every time he touches the ball, would it not make sense for him to just go on strike until he gets a new contract? Management is happy to squeeze every ounce of productivity out of him on the cheap this year, and if he does get injured, they save megabucks. I would feel little loyalty in that circumstance. </b> -- Chuck Vekert, Highland, Md.

  17. Dan Pompei's Bears mailbag

<b>Shouldn't the Bears be concerned about the backup quarterback situation? It's apparent that this team is one Jay Cutler injury away from big trouble. Shouldn't they sign a veteran like Indy just did with Kerry Collins? </b>-- Jeff Bergstrom, Rockford

  19. The Chicago Bears wins the 1963 NFL Championship

Grit, savvy and sheer brutality--those are classic Chicago traits, no matter the endeavor, and they brought the National Football League championship to Chicago on this date, when the Bears defeated the New York Giants 14-10. The Bears had not been a dominant team since the early 1940s, and there were doubts that such success ever would come their way again, given owner-founder George Halas' tightfisted ways (&quot; He throws nickels around like manhole covers," tight end Mike Ditka would later say) and his supposed resistance to new offensive strategies. The Bears would be smash-mouth or not be at all--that was the team image, and this game epitomized it.

    Tribune staff reporter
Greatness came to the Chicago Bears yesterday in the frigidity of Wrigley Field where the team of destiny gave the New York Giants all the best of the breaks and a thoro whipping to win the championship of the National Football league. The score was 14 to...
