Simon Cowell

Highlights
Simon Cowell

He can make or break careers and once boasted that he sells more records than Bruce Springsteen. That confidence helped make Simon Cowell a success as a former judge on "American Idol." Cowell's blunt opinions of a performance stood in contrast to Paula Abdul's mostly positive spin and Randy Jackson's typical middle ground. The bickering with Abdul and host Ryan Seacrest was also a highlight of the Fox series. Cowell has been a judge on British shows "Pop Idol" and "The X Factor," and he produces other contest shows such as "American Inventor" and "America's Got Talent." He will help launch the U.S. version of "The X Factor" in September.  Show more »

  • 'American Idol' recap, The good, bad and bizarre

Tonight, "American Idol" arrived in Oklahoma City, the home of our very own Carrie Underwood. Surely after last night's show and being in a town that produced the likes of the country superstar, this town must be bustling with talent. Right? Not so much. Oh folks, it was a long night.

Northwestern's Gator Bowl preparation included a Monday night trip to Dave & Busters, a Tuesday visit to the United Center for Celtics-Bulls and a Thursday stop at Pinstripes for bowling, bocce and team bonding.

    3. The 1995 Northwestern Wildcats go to the Rose Bowl

Northwestern University playing in the Rose Bowl? Even a winning season had seemed too much to hope for. But in 1995, Northwestern accomplished the impossible, even pushing Michael Jordan and the Bulls off the front page for a while. The Wildcats came out of nowhere to win the Big Ten Conference championship and earn a trip to the Rose Bowl.

    5. Not very ad-Mirer-able

      Tribune staff reporter
Try as they might, it just didn't feel like an NFL game. The constant throbbing of rock music pumped through sideline speakers between each play made it sound more like the NBA. The cheerleaders, on loan from the World League of American League,...

    7. 1st round to Saints, Ditka

      Tribune staff reporter
Here's the update you've been waiting for: The Soldier Field crowd cheered respectfully for Mike Ditka. Ditka shook hands with Mike McCaskey. The Saints can't score and the Bears can't tackle. And, oh yeah, Dave Wannstedt made the right decision on...

    9. Reality bits Bears hard

      Tribune staff reporter
If the Bears have not exactly embraced their fate as participants in one of the worst football seasons in their history, they have now, it seems, accepted it. With an odd sense of detachment at 1-10, they numbly go through the motions of analyzing each...

    11. No stopping this train

      Tribune staff reporter
Maybe the scariest part is that the Bears, to a man, did not know what to say. That they were neither angry nor frustrated as much as positively bewildered. That they had absolutely no clue how to explain what they all admitted was an appalling 32-7...

    13. Motivational magic

      Tribune staff reporter
They all had their reasons. And who's to argue? Except, of course, those Bears fans who would just as soon the team forfeited the remainder of its schedule to secure as high a draft choice as possible. For quarterback Erik Kramer, defeating the Buffalo...

    15. Ugly day, ugly year

      Tribune staff reporter
The off-season envelops them now like both a tropical-island retreat and a long, dark tunnel: enticing for its instant relief, repellent for its protracted agony. And Sunday's hideous 31-15 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers only reinforced the conflict....
