  1. In sports, finances and life, impulse to cheat is strong

    "Cheat, cheat, never beat." Remember that catchy, foreboding maxim drilled into us as kids?
    "Cheat, cheat, never beat." Remember that catchy, foreboding maxim drilled into us as kids? It's comforting to believe cheaters never win and winners never cheat. Unfortunately, there's ample evidence that cheating is rampant in almost every sphere of...

  7. Note to Lance: Winning isn't everything

    Lance Armstrong has been rightly condemned for cheating. It takes skill, raw talent and extreme drive just to complete the Tour de France. However, to use unlawful measures to win it takes a complete unraveling of one's moral compass and a breakdown in ethical boundaries. This is true even if Mr. Armstrong has brought great inspiration to cancer survivors.

  15. Lance Armstrong an argument for book burning

    Lance Armstrong's well-orchestrated apology tour has brought back a bad memory: all the wasted hours I spent reading his book, <a href="http://books.google.com/books/about/It_s_Not_About_the_Bike.html?id=k16cS5-yuAQC" target="_blank">"It's Not About the Bike."</a> I was one of many readers captivated by his dramatic tale: hot-headed young rider gets felled by testicular cancer, and battles back -- against disease and doubters -- to win the Tour de France. It made me a huge fan of Armstrong and the grueling race that takes cyclists around France.&nbsp;

  21. Fans crave what cheating provides

    As a longtime fan of bicycle racing &mdash; I was on the finish line in Paris in 1986 when Greg LeMond became the first American to win the Tour de France &mdash; I followed Lance Armstrong's career with intense excitement as he took cycling from the wings to center stage in his country's sport consciousness. That said, it became clear that while his story of cancer survival was compelling and inspiring, Mr. Armstrong was not a pleasant person. He was selfish and self-centered. But so are many athletes. Getting yourself to that stage of physical perfection is a selfish endeavor.
