The University of Miami Hurricanes football program has one of the strongest traditions in the nation. The school played its first game on Oct. 30, 1926 against Rollins College, winning 7-0. The coach was Howard Buck, who went 15-10-2 in three seasons. The Hurricanes, who wear orange, green and white uniforms, reached national prominence when they won their national title in 1983 under coach Howard Schnellenberger. It was the first of five championships, winning in 1987, 1989, 1991 and 2001. The `91 championship was shared with the University of Washington. While becoming a college power, the Hurricanes established a reputation of being a "bad-boy" program. Their brash and trash-talk on the teams that featured outspoken players such as Michael Irvin, Warren Sapp and Clinton Portis was backed up on the field. From 1926-37, the Hurricanes played home games at Tamiami Park and Moore Park until moving to the historic Orange Bowl the following year. They will play in Dolphin Stadium beginning in 2008. While playing in the Orange Bowl, one of the traditions became players running out of a smoke-filled tunnel onto the field. They completed one of college football's greatest streaks, winning an NCAA record 58 straight games at home from 1985 to 1994. The streak ended with a 38-20 loss to Washington Sept. 24, 1994. During the rise of the program, the school also produced two Heisman Trophy winners. The award is given to the nation's most outstanding player. Quarterback Vinny Testaverde won it 1986, and quarterback Gino Toretta in 1992. They are two of the several NFL players the program produced during its run. The Hurricanes have the most first-round draft choices since 1984 with 47. They have also have the most players taken in the first three rounds with 87. Two of the most famous games in school history occurred in the 1980s. The Hurricanes 1983 title game against Nebraska is considered one of the most thrilling in college football history. They held on for a 31-30 victory, with Nebraska failing on a late two-point conversion. Miami was also on the losing end of Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie's Hail Mary pass in 1985. The Eagles won 47-45 on the last-second play. The school's mascot is Sebastian The Ibis, named after the bird associated with hurricanes.
