Basketball, men and women, and volleyball play in the 5,000-seat Pharmed Arena, opened in 1986 as Sunblazer Arena. In 1989, it was renamed Golden Panther Arena and given its current name in 2004.
The baseball team plays at 2,000-seat University Park Stadium. The school also has an aquatic center, tennis complex, four soccer fields (two added in 2007) and a softball stadium. The football's program inaugural season was 2002, and the Golden Panthers beat Saint Peter's 27-3 before a standing-room-only crowd at the original FIU stadium. The team's record is 16-52. On Dec. 1, 2003, the school began a two-year transition period to move its football program from Division I-AA to Division I as a bowl eligible member of the Sun Belt in 2006. It was the fastest transition known to date, and the university paid for it with NCAA allegations focusing on the lack institutional control that are currently pending. The school was also given a three-year NCAA probation in 2005 for football workout violations. The NCAA problems led to Pete Garcia being named athletic director in 2006. The original athletic director was Doyt Perry. Dr. Dick Young was athletic director in 1987 during the move to Division I.
Don Strock, the former Miami Dolphins quarterback, was the school's first football coach. Mario Cristobal replaced him following the 2006 season. The athletic program was established in 1971, a year before the university opened. The original nickname was Sunblazers, and it remained that way until 1987. In 1987, the women's programs joined the New South Women's Athletic Conference. The Trans America Athletic Conference accepted the men's program in January of 1990. In 1991, the New South Women's Athletic Conference merged with the TAAC. The men's program was the best in TAAC in 1991-1992, winning the first Jesse C. Fletcher Trophy. The Golden Panthers competed in the TAAC until 1999 when they moved to the Sun Belt, with the exception of men's soccer, and they have competed there since. The school has won two national championships in Division II men's soccer and finished second once in Division I soccer. It has won 41 conference championships in Division I with women's basketball (nine), women's cross country (seven) and men's soccer (five) being the most. The Golden Panthers won the Division II national men's soccer championship on Dec. 4, 1982 as they beat South Connecticut State 2-1. The soccer team repeated as national champions on Dec. 8, 1984.
Left-hander Willy Collazo, the Tournament MVP, pitched the final six innings, and Hector Nunez's solo home run was the difference as the baseball team beat favored Notre Dame 5-4 in the NCAA Division I South Bend Regional on May 28, 2001. FIU lost to Southern California in the Super Regional. All-American Sheri-Ann Brooks won the 200-meters in 22.85 to provide FIU with its only NCAA champion in track and field on June 10, 2005. She holds the school record at 22.74. Cindy Russo, the women's basketball coach, has been at FIU since 1977, longest tenure of any active coach. Kremser, who followed Bill Nuttall (1975-79) in 1980, retired after the 2006 season. Danny Price, the baseball coach since 1980, was fired after the 2007 season.
Rich Walker was named the first men's basketball coach on May 11, 1981. Sergio Rouco, the fifth coach, has been in charge since 2004. Third baseman Mike Lowell, the MVP in the 2007 World Series with Boston, is the school's most famous athletic alumnus. He also played on the 2003 Florida Marlins world championship team.
Arroyo (Orlando Magic) and Bell (Phoenix Suns) are still active in the NBA, and Pat Bradley, a LPGA Hall-of Fame golfer, was the school's first All-American in 1973.
