No. 17 Johns Hopkins edged Marquette, 8-6, in double overtime of the teams' season opener Sunday, the first-ever Division I women's lacrosse game played in Houston.
Junior midfielder Kristen Cannon (Manchester Valley) opened the first overtime with a pair of goals just 90 seconds apart to give the Blue Jays a 7-5 lead. On the first, sophomore midfielder Hailey Schweizer dumped the ball down to Cannon, who turned and scored from 6 yards 1:14 into the period. On the second, she dodged through the defense and beat goaltender Sarah Priem high.
Marquette answered less than a minute later, then evened the score with 18 seconds remaining.
