    John Toner's 1955 and 1956 New Britain High football teams were unbeaten in state games. He said yes to UConn moving from the Yankee Conference to the Big East. He hired Jim Calhoun and Geno Auriemma. He was influential in bringing women's sports under the NCAA banner. He is a Connecticut sports legend. The former football coach and athletic director at UConn died Tuesday, the same day as Bill Detrick's funeral. Detrick was another enormous state figure in athletics, primarily through coaching basketball at Central Connecticut for nearly 30 years, yet he also coached golf at Trinity for more than 20 years.
