    Sun reporter
Baseball is no stranger to scandal and unsavory history. One of its earliest superstars, Cap Anson, perpetuated a culture of fierce segregation that scarred the game for decades. Another early great, "Shoeless Joe" Jackson, was one of eight Chicago...

  9. It's hard to top Ingmar Bergman

The other day, after I watched <b>Ingmar Bergman</b>'s &quot;Through a Glass Darkly," the 1961 best-foreign-film Oscar winner, I brooded over my list of best movie directors of all time. Bergman is No. 1 because he and I are Swedish (!) and because of his writing, his Swedish gloominess and his ability to catch a character's soul on camera. With "Darkly," in glorious black and white, we also get to see <b>Sven Nykvist</b>'s contribution to the Bergman oeuvre. If Bergman is best director, then Nykvist (Mr. Shadows and Light) is best cinematographer.

GUSTAVO ARELLANO is a staff writer for the OC Weekly, where he writes the "ĦAsk a Mexican!" column.
THOUGH STEVE LYOns probably doesn't think so right now, sometimes it pays to insult Latinos. Take, for instance, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's description of Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia (R-Cathedral City) as "very hot," followed by this ramble: "I mean,...
