  17. Cruz headlines first Sands Events Center boxing show

    Undefeated Bethlehem welterweight Ronald Cruz will fight in one of the main events tonight in the inaugural professional boxing show at the Sands Event Center. Cruz (17-0 with 13 knockouts), one of three Lehigh Valley area fighters on the seven-bout card, meets Prenice Brewer of Cleveland for the WBC Continental America's welterweight title. The fight will be carried live nationally on the NBC Sports Network, as will the other co-feature, the WBO Inter-Continental Junior Middleweight title fight between Philadelphia's Gabriel Rosado and Brooklyn's Sechew Powell. Also in action will be light heavyweight Jerome Rodriguez of Allentown and former Bethlehem Catholic football player Eric Newell at heavyweight. ... Penn State has named Matt McGloin as starting quarterback and Paul Jones as the backup for the 2012 season. ... The Phillies return from a day off to begin a three-game series tonight with the Miami Marlins at Citizens Bank Park (7 p.m., CSN). Kyle Kendrick takes the mound for the Phils against Mark Buehrle. ... The IronPigs are back at Coca-Cola Park tonight for the first of four games with the Pawtucket Paw Sox.
