Invitational tournaments have not been very kind to the No. 12 John Carroll boys basketball team.
The Patriots (7-4), who captured back-to-back Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championships in 2011 and 2012, went 1-2 at the Sleepy Thompson Invitational last week and started the Gonzaga D.C. Classic with a 47-40 loss to Cesar Chavez (D.C.) on Friday night.
The Eagles (4-3) took their first lead of the game with four minutes remaining in the game on a 3-pointer by Tristan Thompson and held off John Carroll for the win.
Chavez led 39-36 when Elijah Long (11 points) made a layup to cut the lead to one with three minutes to go.
