The Miami Heat announced Wednesday that assistant coach Keith Smart is away from the team after undergoing surgery Monday for a rare form of skin cancer.
The team said Smart, 51, "is expected to make a full recovery" and return to the team in two to three weeks.
Smart issued a statement through the team that said, "My sincere thanks to the medical staff at University of Miami Hospital and to the Heat medical team that steered me in the right direction very early in the process."
Assistant coach Chris Quinn has moved to the Heat bench in Smart's absence.
