Cubs fall to Reds 5-4 in 11 innings; Javier Baez involved in bench-clearing spat

Cubs second baseman Javier Baez and Reds reliever Amir Garrett were the centerpieces of a bench-clearing spat Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Garrett struck out the slumping Baez and yelled while staring directly at Baez, who took exception to Garrett’s antics. The two players shared words and moved directly toward each other near the first-base line.

The benches and bullpens cleared, with Anthony Rizzo sprinting directly toward Garrett, who was pulled back by a teammate as the scrum moved toward him. Willson Contreras restrained teammate Albert Almora Jr. while television cameras caught Garrett chirping as teammates moved him near the Reds’ dugout.
