Wakefield was left off the Red Sox World Series roster in 2007 due to an injured shoulder. In 2005, Wakefield led the Red Sox in wins, starts, innings pitched, strikeouts, complete games and opponents average by a starter en route to a 16-12 record with a 4.15 ERA in 33 starts, pitching exclusively as a starter for the first time since 1996. Wakefield was a vital player in the Red Sox 2004 World Series championship campaign, Boston's first in 86 years. In the regular season, he went 12-10.
In the ALCS, he rescued the bullpen by eating up 3.1 innings of relief in a 19-8 loss to the New York Yankees in Game 3 at Fenway Park. He won game 5 of that series, a 14-inning, 5 hour-49 minute marathon in Boston, with three no-hit innings of relief in a 5-4 Red Sox victory. He was a rookie with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992 and pitched two complete-game victories in the NLCS. In 1995, his first season with Boston, Wakefield finished 3rd in A.L. Cy Young voting after going 16-8 and throwing six complete games and 195.1 innings.
