Orioles claim infielder Luis Sardinas off waivers from Padres

The Orioles claimed infielder Luis Sardinas  from the San Diego Padres, the club announced Wednesday.

Sardinas, 24, hit just .163/.226/.163 in 29 games with the Padres before he was designated for assignment earlier this week. Primarily a shortstop over his major league career, he has also played extensively at second and third base.

As part of the claim, Sardinas was added to the club’s 40-man roster, but no corresponding move to add him to the 25-man roster was made. Because he is out of options, he would have to clear waivers before being sent to the minors if he’s not placed on the active roster.
