One of the reasons for the renovation of Wrigley Field, along with the obvious financial benefits, was the need for modern-day essentials such as batting cages. So it was funny to hear manager Joe Maddon downplay the importance of batting practice, which he called off four of the last five days of the Cubs’ 6-1 homestand. Players still were allowed to hit before games in the small cages underneath the right-field bleachers. Maddon, a former hitting coach, said hitters “swing the bat way too often,” and “too many times (it) develops into home run derby and really becomes useless.” He traces the emphasis on batting practice back to the early 1980’s...
