Paul Konerko

Paul Konerko earned a niche in local history as captain of the 2005 White Sox, Chicago's first World Series champions in 88 years. Konerko, the Sox first baseman, caught the final out of the Series sweep against Houston and saved the ball until he could present it to Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf at a victory parade attended by an estimated 1 million fans. Konerko and World Series MVP Jermaine Dye also presented a White Sox jersey to President Bush at a White House reception. During the 2005 playoffs, Konerko was named the MVP of the American League Championship Series against the Angels, hitting .268 with two homers and seven RBIs. During the 2005 playoffs, Konerko was named the MVP of the American League Championship Series against the Angels, hitting .268 with two homers and seven RBIs. In the second game of the World Series, Konerko hit a dramatic grand slam to put the White Sox ahead 6-4 in a game they'd go on to win 7-6 on Scott Podsednik's walkoff home run. Following the World Series, Konerko became a free agent and was ardently pursued by the Angels until Reinsdorf signed him to a five-year contract worth $60 million. Konerko was drafted by the Dodgers as a catcher out of Scottsdale, Ariz. The White Sox acquired him from the Cincinnati Reds in 1999 for outfielder Mike Cameron. He had been a third baseman but was moved to first base and quickly became a fixture at U. S. Cellular Field, helping the White Sox make the playoffs in 2000. « Show less

The momentum that shifted over to the home team when J.J. Hardy's go-ahead three-run homer sailed into the left-field seats in the bottom of the seventh inning lasted all of a couple of minutes before the Orioles reminded everyone why they have the worst record in the American League.

  13. Reimold's walk-off homer lifts Orioles over White Sox, 6-4

The Orioles so badly needed to avoid the sting of another close loss that it wouldn't have mattered who got the game-winning hit. But it was particularly satisfying for them to gather around home plate in the 10th inning Wednesday night, awaiting Nolan Reimold's helmet-tossing arrival.

  23. Your turn: Should Wieters have been the Orioles' lone All-Star?

Matt Wieters' selection to next week’s All-Star Game was sweet, sweet redemption for the young catcher, who was labeled as one of the biggest busts in baseball history by Baseball Prospectus before the start of the season -- just his third in the major leagues. That claim was met with criticism in Birdland and beyond, and the Orioles backstop has proved that the rumors of his looming mediocrity were greatly exaggerated.
