Michael Warren Maroth is a left-handed professional baseball pitcher who made his debut for the Detroit Tigers in 2002. In late 2007, he was a free agent after being released by St. Louis in October. He posted a 6-10 record in his rookie season in 2002.
Unfortunately for Maroth, he is best known for losing 21 games in 2003 for Detroit, making him the first pitcher to lose 20 or more games in a season since Brian Kingman lost 20 for the Oakland Athletics in 1980. Overlooked was that he also led the Tigers with nine victories that year and win-loss percentage of .300. The Tigers set the American League record of 119 games lost (43-119) that season, so Maroth had a lot of company. Maroth came back with an 11-13 record in 2004. His ERA was 4.31. The highlight of that season was a one-hit complete game against the New York Yankees in September.
In 2005, Maroth was 14-14 with a 4.74 ERA for the second best effort on the team behind Jeremy Bonderman. Maroth appeared to have come into his own at the start of 2006 as the No. 3 starter in the rotation, posting a 5-2 record before bone chips in his left elbow forced him on to the Disabled List for most of the season. He returned at the end for four relief appearances but was not effective. He was not on the postseason roster.
Maroth returned to the starting rotation in 2007 and was 5-2 after 78.3 innings when traded to St. Louis for a player to be named later that turned out to be minor league pitcher Chris Lambert. Maroth struggled in the National League and was 0-4 for St. Louis before his release. Maroth pitched for the University of Central Florida before being originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the third round in 1998. He spent two years with Sarasota in Single-A ball before being traded to the Detroit organization. He advanced from Single-A Lakeland to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens before being called to the majors.
