Jason Varitek is a catcher and team captain for the Boston Red Sox. He was born on April 11, 1972 in Rochester, Mich. A switch-hitter, Varitek anchored the Red Sox rotation and bullpen during Boston's championship seasons in 2004 and 2007. Known for his meticulous planning and handling of pitching staffs, Varitek, 6-2, 230 pounds, also brought power to the Red Sox lineup, although his production fell off slightly in 2007. In 2005, Varitek played in his first All-Star Game and finished that season with 22 HR and 70 RBI in 133 games for the Red Sox. In 2004, with Varitek handling both top-tier pitchers Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling to perhaps their best seasons, the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years. He hit a career best .296 in 137 games. Varitek was acquired by the Red Sox on July 31, 1997 with pitcher Derek Lowe from the Seattle Mariners for reliever Heathcliff Slocumb. Varitek grew up in Longwood, Fla., where he played shortstop on the Atlamonte Springs (Fla.) team that lost in the finals of the 1984 Little League World Series. He attended Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs and then played for Georgia Tech.
