Green Monster

Highlights

The Green Monster is the nickname of the left field wall at Fenway Park, home to the Boston Red Sox. The 37-foot wall is the highest among Major League Baseball fields. It is known for preventing home runs, but in turn, also allows for more double as the ball bounces off the wall. In the 2002-03 offseason, the Green Monster (which wasn't actually painted green until 1947) experienced some construction with the creation of 274 fan seats. The official mascot of the Red Sox is named Wally, a furry green monster, in honor of Fenway's famous wall.  Show more »

  15. Baltimore Orioles: In twilight, duende touches the DH

Before we move on to other business, we need to savor that baseball epic on Sunday, when the duende visited the Orioles in Fenway Park. The duende is from the realm of the metaphysical, a certain something that rises from dark corners to imbue flamenco dancers, singers and athletes with perfect skill and grace under pressure. I think I know it when I see it, and I saw it with the Orioles in Boston.
