Buck Showalter and the challenge of taking a representative spring lineup on the road

Orioles manager Buck Showalter talks about it every year at about this time. He, like most major league managers, prefers to limit the spring travel of his everyday players ... for a number of reasons.

It's partly a status thing. The veteran and regular players get some extra deference because of what they've accomplished in the game, which serves as an affirmation for players who have worked their way up and as a motivation for the guys who are trying to reach the same level.

It's also a practical matter, since the coaching staff needs to see a lot of players over a month of spring training games and teams prefer to put their best players on display in front of the local fans...
