PHILADELPHIA — Ryan Howard and Phillies manager Pete Mackanin had a conversation Wednesday.
Mackanin described the "adult conversation" as great, but tough.
It was one in which the skipper informed Howard he would be getting the next three or four days off to clear his head, and in turn, give Tommy Joseph more playing time at first base.
"I wanted to see Joseph and I thought it was the right thing to do," Mackanin said.
There was no communication with the front office about the decision, according to Mackanin, who said Howard's break could extend to a week if Joseph puts together enough good at-bats before the weekend.
