5. Orioles notes: Hardy's error notwithstanding, O's defense has improved in second half

NEW YORK — Shortstop J.J. Hardy's seventh-inning error allowed the winning run to score in the Orioles' 4-3 loss to the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon, but a marked improvement in the field fielding during the second half of the season has been instrumental to the O's recent surge toward the top of the American League East.

Sept. 6, 1995: Cal Ripken Jr. plays in his 2,131st consecutive game, breaking Lou Gehrig's major league record that had stood for 56 years. Fireworks explode around Camden Yards as Ripken jogs a victory lap around the field. A sellout crowd of 46,272 — including President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore — demand four curtain calls from the Orioles' Iron Man. Ripken responds by hitting a home run as the Birds defeat California, 4-2.

  13. Some random Orioles thoughts (Flanagan, Ripken, Mussina, Dauer, Flaherty, Marin)

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the death of Mike Flanagan at his home in Monkton. He would be 60 years old. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Suicide is an exceptionally difficult issue for survivors to deal with. From my personal experience, that first-year anniversary is a real difficult day. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Orioles have a moment of silence in honor of Flanny’s memory tonight.
