Highlights

Originally the Boston Americans, founded in 1901, the Red Sox won the first World Series in 1903. Playing its games from 1912 to the present at tiny and quirky Fenway Park, with its 37-foot high wall in left field called "The Green Monster" and other unique features, the Red Sox are woven deeply into the fabric of New England, the capital of a fandom referred to as "Red Sox Nation," because of its widespread reach. From 1978-2003, the Red Sox's decades-long inability to win the World Series -- often at the hands of the New York Yankees, often in improbable and heartbreaking ways -- became the primary identity of the franchise, summed up as "The Curse of the Bambino," a reference to the sale...
From 1978-2003, the Red Sox's decades-long inability to win the World Series -- often at the hands of the New York Yankees, often in improbable and heartbreaking ways -- became the primary identity of the franchise, summed up as "The Curse of the Bambino," a reference to the sale of Babe Ruth to the New York club. But the fortunes of the franchise changed in stunning fashion in 2004. Again facing the Yankees in the ALCS, the Red Sox lost the first three games, losing Game 3 at Fenway 19-8. But in the ninth inning of Game 4, Dave Roberts stole second base off closer Mariano Rivera, then scored the tying run. David Ortiz got the first of two straight walk-off hits in the 12th inning with a two-run homer. He repeated the feat later that same day in Game 5 with a single in the 14th inning. In Game 6, Curt Schilling pitched with a sutured right ankle, blood oozing through his sock, but earned the victory, forcing a Game 7 that the Red Sox won easily. It was the first time in baseball history a team won a series after trailing 0-3. The Red Sox then swept St. Louis in the World Series, its first title in 86 years. The Red Sox would win again in 2007, recovering from a 3-1 deficit to Cleveland in the ALCS, then sweeping Colorado for the title.

Orioles' bullpen issues go beyond Jim Johnson's recent struggles
The Orioles were not a perfect team in 2012, though it's easy to get nostalgic about their first truly competitive season of this century. They were plugging holes in the starting rotation throughout the summer. They needed several months to assemble an...

Is it too soon for Orioles fans to start panicking?
Less than two weeks ago, the Orioles were tied for first place in the American League East. Despite subpar starting pitching, they were winning games -- more than 60 percent of them -- because Manny Machado, Adam Jones and Chris Davis were pounding the...

More with Phil Niekro on working with Zach Clark and Eddie Gamboa
The Baltimore SunIn today’s Baltimore Sun, I wrote a story on the Orioles’ efforts to convert minor league pitchers Zach Clark and Eddie Gamboa into knuckleballers. Clark and Gamboa are working with Hall of Fame knuckleballer Phil Niekro, who won 318 games...Tags: Baseball, Minor League Baseball, Baltimore Orioles, Tim Wakefield, R.A. Dickey

Orioles are out of the frying pan
The Baltimore SunFor the first five weeks of the season, the Orioles slogged through one of the toughest early season schedules in baseball and came out clean on the other side. An impressive display of power, timely hitting and solid relief that has made them one of...Tags: Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, David Price, Cy Young Award

Orioles minor leaguers Clark and Gamboa hope knuckleball lands them in big leagues
The Baltimore SunWhen right-hander Zach Clark was summoned to Orioles manager Buck Showalter's office two weeks ago and told he was being designated for assignment, the conversation suddenly veered off in a peculiar direction. Clark, who at that moment was still...Tags: Baseball, Spring Training, Minor League Baseball, Cy Young Award, Baltimore Orioles

Even in an unimpressive loss, Manny Machado is fun to watch
The question came at Buck Showalter a few minutes after the Orioles' shaky 8-4 loss to the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, when it seemed the only bright spot at Camden Yards all afternoon was the white-hot bat of Manny Machado. "Is the way Manny's...

Are you ready to include Machado among the best young players?
The Baltimore SunI’m a little afraid to toss this question around in the bar today. I’m afraid some of you may be throwing haymakers if the discussion gets heated. It could turn into a donnybrook or brouhaha if things get ugly. (Yes, I know it is a fake...Tags: Baseball, American League, Giancarlo Stanton, Starling Marte, Baltimore Orioles

How does Manny Machado compare with some of baseball's young phenoms?
When he charges onto the infield grass, makes that barehanded pickup and throws a rocket to first, Manny Machado reminds Orioles fans of a superstar third baseman of yesteryear. When he breaks out of the batter's box on a liner into the gap and hits...

Orioles continue to show that 2012 was no fluke
It was about this time last year — give or take a week — that it became apparent the Orioles had undergone some kind of karmic transformation. The exact date was May 6, 2012 and the team was at Fenway Park. Nobody has to tell a real fan the...

Orioles rise to No. 1 in Yahoo Sports' baseball power rankings
The Baltimore SunThey say you’re not really supposed to read much into baseball standings until Memorial Day, and power rankings surely fall under the same umbrella. But it’s probably OK for Orioles fans to take a little satisfaction in seeing that their...Tags: Baseball, ESPN (tv network), American League East, Memorial Day

Orioles' 5-3 victory over Kansas City Royals puts them in first-place tie
The Baltimore SunWednesday night's win over the Kansas City Royals didn't follow any sort of traditional script, but the result remained a familiar one for these surging Orioles.
