Johnson on a mission
Every driver is motivated. Every one believes he has a shot. Everybody is excited. That's all hunky-dory. The 2012 NASCAR season has yet to start and the optimistic rumble from the garages always precedes the realistic rumble on the track, when the usual...Tags: Chad, NASCAR, Butterfly Ballots, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Tony Stewart

Old-timers set to get back on the track
As the days tick away for the start of a fresh season at Daytona International Speedway, there still will be moments of old-school reverence at the fabled superspeedway. Welcome back, Ward Burton. We'll see you soon, too, Bill Elliott. Both "old-...Tags: NASCAR, Walmart, Wildlife, Cartoon Network (tv network), Michael Waltrip

Don't count on Chase changes
Although there has been an occasional push from a driver to include a road course in the Chase — I recall Ryan Newman suggesting that Daytona's road course could be a viable venue — don't expect any changes in the current format. The road...Tags: NASCAR, Jeff Gordon, Athletes, Joe Gibbs, Elections

Call it the chase before the Chase
It's shaping up to be a wild ride as NASCAR heads into the last two regular-season races (Atlanta, Sunday night) and Richmond (Sept. 10) before the 12-driver field is set for the Chase. Five guys are in: Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Carl...Tags: NASCAR, Jeff Gordon, Fox Sports (tv network), Jersey Shore (tv program), Brad Keselowski

White House-NASCAR flap sign of contentious times
So who doesn't want to go to the White House? Don't ask that question in the NASCAR garage. You might get an indignant stare. Or a lot of lip from a driver who thinks you have labeled him a Communist. A silly "controversy" is brewing because several...Tags: NASCAR, 3M Co., White House, Vehicles, Greg Biffle

Martin, Patrick could be good fit
As Danica Patrick makes the transition from the open-wheel world to NASCAR nation, she will have an excellent mentor. Tony Stewart will be her team owner while she races a select number of Cup races. Another mentor couldn't hurt. Mark Martin, anybody?...Tags: NASCAR, Clubs and Associations, David Ragan, Jeff Burton, Tony Stewart

Gordon's reign cleanses
HAMPTON, Ga. — Shortly after the 200th lap in Tuesday's AdvoCare 500, a heavy mist started falling on Atlanta Motor Speedway, forcing officials to call for a caution. After pit stops by the usual suspects, it was time to meet the new drivers atop...Tags: Bobby Allison, NASCAR, Juan Pablo Montoya, Jeff Gordon, ESPN (tv network)

Safety revolution protecting drivers
NFL players are getting dinged every week with concussions. Sidney Crosby, the best player in the NHL, hasn't played since January because of a concussion. Yet it's interesting to note that no one in NASCAR is missing significant time after getting his...Tags: NASCAR, National Football League, David Ragan, Daytona International Speedway, Greg Biffle

They'll be playing it safe
Welcome to NASCAR's wild-card weekend. It's Talladega, baby, where wreckin' and racin' are part of the lore of one of NASCAR's famed superspeedways. For the handful of guys still in the hunt for a Cup title, it means a conservative approach for much...Tags: NASCAR, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson

Title chase takes backseat
As years go, it hasn't been a great one for Jimmie Johnson. He still has a fighting chance to claim his unprecedented sixth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup title, but that's strictly an optimistic spin. Johnson's shot at winning the title would rely on...Tags: NASCAR, Bodies of Water, Martinsville (Martinsville, Virginia), Tony Stewart, Key West
