  3. Family values and the new economy

My mother went into paid work soon after my father's clothing store was flooded out in a hurricane, almost wiping him out. She had no choice. We needed the money.

  9. Common sense on Plan B

Last week, a federal district judge in New York ruled that girls younger than 17 should be allowed to purchase the Plan B contraceptive pill over the counter. Unlike the Obama administration, Judge Edward Korman got this one right. The 2011 decision by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to restrict access for younger girls not only denied them a safe and legal means to prevent unwanted pregnancy but ignored all scientific evidence that supported its access.

  13. America lags on plain speech

The Internet is changing how leaders talk. Leaders from Rome to Beijing and beyond are helping usher in a new era of plain speaking. But American leaders are lagging behind, stuck in old patterns of windy and obfuscatory speech.

  15. Speed limits soon in rearview mirror

How easy to forget ("Higher speed limit law moves forward," March 21). Do some of you old timers remember the fuss we made when the speed limit on Interstate 95 was changed to 65 miles per hour? Now, 70 miles per hour is almost normal. So it will be...

  17. Honoring Harriet Tubman

President Barack Obama's designation Monday of a new national monument to Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery on a Dorchester County plantation in 1849, then helped guide scores of other slaves to freedom in the North during the decade before the Civil War, honors a small and unprepossessing African-American woman who played an outsized role in American history.

  21. Next step for feminism: Go global

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Betty Friedan's "The Feminine Mystique," which revealed the mind-numbing ennui of the mid-20th century American housewife, and a great deal of ink has been spilled describing how far we still have to go, baby.

The lone Union sentry stands atop Federal Hill, outlined against an ominous orange/red sky. In the distance, the tops of the Washington Monument and several spires rise above the city, as straight and determined as the rifle held in the soldier's left arm.
