  1. Gay quarterback coming out on 'Necessary Roughness' matters, analysts say

Gay characters coming out in prime time is nothing new.
    The Baltimore Sun
Gay characters coming out in prime time is nothing new. In fact, “Coming-out narratives are cliches,” according to Ron Becker, author of “Gay TV and Straight America” (Rutgers University Press, 2006). “They were big in...

  9. The privilege to be weird, and the right to be normal

Last week, while driving to work, I heard an NPR story that included snippets of an interview with a woman who had just applied for a marriage license. This would not have been newsworthy if not for the fact that she was gay. On Nov. 6, voters in Washington, Maryland and Maine approved marriage equality laws. Last Thursday was the first day that gay and lesbian couples in Washington state could fill out forms and exercise their new right.

  17. Super Bowl setting a prime opportunity for Brendon Ayanbadejo's push for gay rights

Brendon Ayanbadejo doesn’t need Super Bowl XLVII to assist the cause for gay rights and gay marriage. But the Ravens inside linebacker won’t turn down the opportunity during the week in New Orleans to champion the push for equality.

  21. Arundel follies, Dwyer's drinking, Ravens on the wrist

All the world's a stage, especially Anne Arundel County. It has produced, far and away, the best shows of the season: a County Council member sent to prison, followed by a long squabble over his replacement; a congenial county executive charged with being a creep; a police chief forced to retire; a gay-bashing delegate involved in a drunken boat crash; a loquacious council member accused of bullying constituents on Election Day.

  23. Pass the Violence Against Women Act

The 1994 Violence Against Women Act has done tremendous good in stepping up prosecution of domestic violence, aiding victims and increasing awareness of a too-often silent threat to our society. But the act was allowed to lapse in 2011 amid partisan bickering. On Tuesday, the Senate sent a strong signal by voting to reauthorize the law by an overwhelming 78-22 vote, but its survival in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives is, sadly, far from certain.
