The gun lobby's lawsuit against Maryland's life-saving Firearm Safety Act described in Saturday's front page article does not challenge the constitutionality of the key provision of the act — requiring handgun purchasers to first obtain a fingerprint based background check and license from the state police ("21 states hope to overturn Maryland's gun control law," Nov. 21). They did not challenge this provision because they knew they would lose — similar measures have been reducing gun violence in other states for decades with little or no objection from gun owners.
