1. A sensitive portrait of a troubled child

Thanks very much and congratulations on Kevin Rector's very informative and sensitive article, "Girl charged in father's death struggled with mental health" (May 19). As educators and professional counselors, and as residents of the Mount Hebron area with children who graduated from the high school, we have been shocked at the news of Dennis Lane's murder. Your story provided valuable information about the complex issues that parents and educators deal with in relation to children and students who have developmental and mental health issues. Hopefully, this tragic event and the information you have provided will help parents, educators and members of the community work together to deal with these kinds of issues in a proactive and preventive manner.

  5. The search for the right venue was a little like the search for the right college

Traditionally, the bride’s parents are the hosts of the ceremony. They send out the invitations, pay for the reception and coordinate a long day of celebration. The groom’s family takes care of the bride’s ring, the marriage license and their honeymoon.

  17. Goo Goo Dolls singer talks new album, ahead of Black-Eyed Susan Day concert

John Rzeznik, lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls, should know a thing or two about wedding songs. He wrote the inescapable hit "Iris" in 1998, which plenty of newly married couples have played for their first dance, including, most famously, singer Avril Lavigne in 2006.

  21. All it took was some ribbon, silk and tulle

“Let’s try that one first,” I said, pointing to the craziest wedding gown the saleswoman had selected for me. It was tight through the hips, with geometric ribbon designs that started on the bodice and trailed down through the choppy tulle skirt. It was an avant-garde kind of wedding dress you might wear if your reception was at Sidebar in Downtown Baltimore or the Renaissance Festival – a little punk, a little medieval. It wasn’t remotely my style, but I wanted the first dress I tried on to be memorable and this certainly fit the bill.

  23. Will Minnesota make a marriage equality trifecta?

Six months after Maryland, Maine and Washington voters endorsed same-sex marriage at the ballot box, two more states have adopted laws allowing gay couples to marry, and a third is poised to join them. On Tuesday, lawmakers in Delaware adopted a same-sex marriage law, and Minnesota's House of Representatives passed a marriage equality measure there today, setting up a final vote in the Senate on Monday. Last week the Rhode Island legislature adopted a similar measure. That three states have moved to legalize gay marriage over the span of less than a month shows how quickly public attitudes toward same-sex unions are changing. Still, more progress may be difficult until more Republicans start to see the issue as one of civil rights, equal protection under the law and individual liberty.
