Raiders CB Hayden (foot) could remain on PUP

The injuries keep on coming for Oakland Raiders cornerback DJ Hayden, who appears headed to the regular season physically unable to perform list following foot surgery.

Hayden was the 12th overall pick in the 2013 draft from Houston, where he overcame a life-threatening injury to return to the field and catch the eye of Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie.

But he played in only eight games last season and underwent foot surgery in late July. He has not participated in any portion of preseason practice and remains on the physically unable to perform list. T he Raiders want to protect their significant investment by getting him fully healthy before he returns to the field.

Two standout defensive linemen, Sheldon Richardson of the New York Jets and Star Lotulelei (Carolina Panthers) were drafted with the two picks immediately following Hayden in 2013. That selection was a surprise to many, given Hayden's health concerns and the risk involved for a team that had precious few draft chances in recent seasons.

If Hayden winds up on the PUP list as expected, he would miss at least the first six games, and Oakland's suspect secondary would be further taxed.

The Raiders signed former 49ers cornerbacks Tarell Brown and Carlos Rogers in the offseason. Behind those veterans are 2014 seventh-round pick Travis Carrie and Chimdi Chekwa, a fourth-round pick in 2011.
