MLB Team Report - St. Louis Cardinals SAN DIEGO -- In an attempt to bolster their rotation for a late-season run, the St. Louis Cardinals acquired right-handed starter Justin Masterson from the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.

Masterson, 29, will make his Cardinals debut in St. Louis on Saturday in the middle game of a three-game series against the National League Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers.

The defending National League champion Cardinals have slipped into third in the Central and are also currently tied for third in the race for the two National League wild-card berths.

Masterson, who was acquired for Double-A outfielder James Ramsey, might not be the pitcher who will push the Cardinals over the top. He is 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA in 19 starts for the Indians this season. He spent the past two weeks on the Indians' disabled list due to right knee inflammation, and he made two rehab starts for Triple-A Columbus.

The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Masterson was a member of the American League All-Star team in 2013. He was 14-10 last season with a 3.45 ERA. He finished eighth in the AL last year with 195 strikeouts and led the league with three shutouts.

Masterson, who was born in Jamaica, has a career record of 57-69 with a 4.16 ERA in 231 games (169 starts) for Boston (2008-9) and Cleveland.
