The second superhero blockbuster of the year, Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," is on track for a potential $95 million Stateside opening next month.
According to insider estimates, the movie could earn as much as $100 million when it swing into theaters on May 2.
Sony's pic more than $30 million ahead of the "The Amazing Spider-Man" and on par with Disney-Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," which bowed to a record-breaking $96 million last weekend. "The Amazing Spider-Man" went on to gross $752 million worldwide ($262 million domestic).
Sony rebooted the Spider-Man franchise in 2012, five years after the mega-success of Sam Raimi's trilogy. However, the movie series has grossed less so far with Andrew Garfield as Spidey. Each of the Tobey Maguire-starring "Spider-Man" movies earned more during their opening weekends and overall, both Stateside and worldwide, than "Amazing Spider-Man." The final chapter of Raimi's franchise made $151 million when it opened on May 4, 2007. It hauled $891 worldwide ($337 million domestic).
If the $95 million projection pans out, "Amazing Spider-Man 2" could be on track, appropriately enough, with 2004′s "Spider-Man 2," which debuted to $88 million (the lowest of the three pics) and commanded a strong $784 million worldwide. The two movies also reportedly have matching $200 million budgets.
BoxOffice.com is projecting a much bolder $112 million opening and $265 million domestic cume.
Although "Winter Soldier" started the summer blockbuster season early in April, the covered first weekend in May is historically the best time to launch a comic book movie. "The Avengers" and "Iron Man 3" had the two biggest domestic openings ever when they debuted during that time frame in 2012 and 2013, respectively, demanding $207.4 and $174.1 million.
Before 2012, only two other movies became summer box office champions after opening that weekend: "Spider-Man 3" in 2007 and "Spider-Man" in 2002.
The franchise, which is Sony's answer to Disney's yet unbeatable Marvel movies and Warner Bros.' DC Comics adaptations, shows no signs of slowing down. "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" will go into production next fall and will be released on June 10, 2016. The fourth installment is scheduled for May 4, 2018. At least two of the sequels will focus on the infamous villains Sinister Six and Venom.
Drew Goddard is in negotiations to direct the Sinister Six movie as Webb will sign off after the third movie.
