ABC Family continues to make inroads in original comedy, with its tandem of "Melissa & Joey" and "Baby Daddy" showing nice gains as they returned to the net's lineup on Wednesday.
Despite facing Fox's season premiere of "American Idol," the winter premiere of ABC Family's "Melissa & Joey" was cable's No. 1 telecast in the 8 o'clock half-hour in women 18-34 (365,000), women 18-49 and females 12-34 (456,000) and the top-rated original scripted cable series in other categories like adults 18-34 (445,000), adults 18-49 (544,000) and viewers 12-34 (468,000).
"Baby Daddy," which has become ABC Family's No. 1 comedy of all time, also had its best showing in 17 months, rising by 28% in total viewers (to 1.1 million) and a big 46% in adults 18-34 (to 458,000) vs. its second-season premiere last spring.
For its 8:30 p.m. half-hour on Wednesday, the comedy starring Jean-Luc Bilodeau was cable's No. 1 telecast in females 12-34 and the top-rated oriignal scripted cable telecsast in adults 18-34 (458,000) and other target demos.
Last summer, both "Melissa & Joey" and "Baby Daddy" gained more than 50% when full-week DVR playback was added to their same-night viewing levels, with both rising to about 1.4 million total viewers.
