The Broadway revival of "Cinderella" has tapped Fran Drescher to play the wicked stepmother in the Rodgers and Hammerstein tuner, with the actress set to step into the role in the spring.
She'll make her Main Stem bow in the musical, although she's been seen onstage in Gotham in Off Broadway titles "Some Girl(s)" and "Love, Loss and What I Wore," as well as in a New York Philharmonic presentation of "Camelot." In "Cinderella" the actress will step into a role originated by Harriet Harris.
Drescher, best known for CBS sitcom "The Nanny" as well as the recent TV Land skein "Happily Divorced," joins "Cinderella" Feb. 4 for a ten-week run that finishes April 13. Timing won't offer a potential boost to the show during the traditionally slow sales weeks of January, but looks to attract theatergoer attention as the spring season's newer offerings crowd into the spotlight.
