'Breaking Bad' Writer Tapped for Universal's 'Red Queen' (EXCLUSIVE)

Universal has tapped "Breaking Bad" scribe Gennifer Hutchison to adapt fantasy actioner "The Red Queen."

Hutchison was nominated Thursday for a Writers Guild of America award for the "Confessions" episode on the AMC drama series. She was also nominated as one the seven writers for the "Breaking Bad" nomination for the WGA drama series award. The series received the best drama Emmy in September.

Universal optioned the book from author Victoria Aveyard in May. Benderspink and Pouya Shazbazian will produce. Christopher Cosmos will also produce in some capacity.

The first in a trilogy, "Red Queen" is set in a fantasy world where society is divided by the color of blood. It features a 17-year-old girl who, to save her family, must assume the role of a long lost princess while secretly aiding a revolution.

With still over a year before publication, "Red Queen" has already sold into 16 different languages.

Creative executive Sara Scott will oversee the project for Universal.

Hutchison previously earned WGA nominations for her "Breaking Bad" episodes "Buy Out" and "I See You" in the same category. She was executive story editor on the final "Breaking Bad" season and is currently a producer on FX's Guillermo del Toro-Carlton Cuse series "The Strain."

Hutchinson is represented by ICM Partners. She was listed in Variety's 10 TV Writers to Watch list for 2013.

Aveyard is represented for publishing by Townsend & New Leaf and co-managed by Shahbazian and Benderspink for film and TV. She is also repped by attorney Steve Younger of Myman Greenspan.
