Amazon, continuing to spend on content to challenge Netflix, inked a deal with indie film distributor A24 under which it will obtain exclusive subscription VOD rights to titles including Scarlett Johansson-starrer "Under the Skin," "Spring Breakers" and "The Bling Ring."
Terms of the multiyear pact were not disclosed. The agreement makes Amazon's Prime Instant Video the exclusive premium subscription home for all current and forthcoming A24 titles shortly following their release on DVD and Blu-Ray.
"This new deal with A24 allows us to offer those same titles to our Prime Instant Video customers soon after they are released on DVD and Blu-Ray and at no additional cost," Beale said.
Four theatrical releases are initially covered under the deal: Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers," starring James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez; "Ginger & Rosa," directed by Sally Potter, starring Elle Fanning and Annette Bening; "The Bling Ring," directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Emma Watson; and James Ponsoldt's "The Spectacular Now," starring Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller.
Future titles will include A24's upcoming releases like Jonathan Glazer's "Under The Skin" and "The Rover," helmed by David Michôd and starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson.
New York-based A24 was formed last year with backing from Guggenheim Partners.
"As an independent film distributor, our relationship with Amazon Prime Instant Video marks the next generation in output deals," said A24 chief operating officer Matthew Bires. "Not only can we share our content with an engaged audience, we have access to better analytics to monitor the films' reach. Amazon is an extremely innovative and entrepreneurial company and the scope and dynamism of the platform is incredibly exciting for our films."
Separately, A24 this fall struck a deal with DirecTV to jointly acquire films for U.S. distribution. Under the pact, DirecTV -- which is putting $40 million to the partnership -- will have rights to offer the films on-demand 30 days prior to theatrical release.
