DirecTV is expanding its Internet video service to let subscribers watch more than 30 live TV channels outside the home -- including HBO, Showtime, Starz and Food Network -- and will deliver 100 live TV in-home streaming channels.
The satcaster also will relaunch its Android tablet app to support both live and on-demand programming across all screen sizes and various operating systems. In addition, DirecTV is expanding its on demand content lineup on DirecTV.com to provide more than 19,000 titles from 40-plus networks.
HGTV, beIN Sports, beIN Sports EspaÃ±ol, Sony Movie Channel, Bloomberg TV, Tennis Channel, Cinemax East, Cooking Channel, DIY Network, Travel Channel and DirecTV's Audience Network. The live TV channels are available over Wi-Fi or mobile Internet connections.
"It is essential that we align with our programming partners to ensure we can deliver high-quality content with the immediacy consumers expect," Tony Goncalves, senior VP of DirecTV's Digital Entertainment Products, said in a statement.
Other pay-TV operators have been ratcheting up Internet-streaming options. Comcast last month renamed its mobile-video app Xfinity TV Go, which now lets subs watch 35 live cable channels on mobile devices over Wi-Fi.
DirecTV has offered live streaming of its exclusive NFL Sunday Ticket programming package, which provides all Sunday pro football games live on multiple devices. The satcaster has also offered Audience Network as a live stream outside the home.
