Sony Computer Entertainment said it sold 1 million PlayStation 4 systems in the 24 hours after it became available Friday in the U.S. and Canada, with many of those representing pre-order purchases.
"PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal," Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said in a statement Sunday.

Sony said sales "remain very strong" in North America, and is expecting a strong showing in Europe and Latin America when the system goes on sale Nov. 29. House has predicted the company will sell more than 5 million PS4 units by March 2014.
Some PS4 users have reported hardware issues with initial units, including faulty HDMI output ports and boot failures. Sony said the hardware problems appeared to be "isolated incidents," limited to a very small number of consoles.
Sony is facing off against Microsoft's Xbox One, set to launch Friday, Nov. 22. The PS4 lists at $399 vs. the Xbox One's $499, although the latter includes the Kinect voice and motion controllers whereas PlayStation Camera is sold separately.

The websites of Amazon.com, Best Buy and GameStop on Sunday said the PS4 was out of stock. "Due to extremely high demand, Amazon.com is currently sold out of the PlayStation 4 inventory. However, there may be offers available from Marketplace Sellers," the e-commerce site said in a notice.
The PS4 launch culminates years of development, replacing the PlayStation 3, which debuted in November 2006.
