NBC won Tuesday in key demos behind an extended episode of "The Voice," which handily beat Fox's special night of "The X Factor" in their common hour. Also of note on the night, ABC rookie comedies "The Goldbergs" and "Trophy Wife" increased their chances of getting a back-nine order with solid performances.
According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, NBC followed "The Biggest Loser" (1.8/5 in 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall) with a two-hour "Knockouts" round episode of "The Voice" (3.5/10 in 18-49, 11.4 million viewers overall), which won all four half-hours in demos. Even though both of NBC's reality shows were at season lows, the net won Tuesday in 18-49 and has now captured the night all six weeks to start the season.
CBS, second on the night in 18-49 and first in 25-54 and total viewers, was led as usual by the steady "NCIS" (3.0/9 in 18-49, 19.0 million viewers overall), Tuesday's No. 1 scripted show in all categories and the most-watched program overall. It was followed by "NCIS: Los Angeles" (2.6/7 in 18-49, 14.8 million viewers overall), which was up a bit from last week and was a solid No. 2 for its hour in adults 25-54 (3.6/8). And closing the night, "Person of Interest" hit a same-night low (1.8/5 in 18-49, 11.9 million viewers overall) to place second among the broadcasters in 18-49 and 25-54; it beat out the special second hour of "The Voice" in total viewers.
At ABC, the first repeat of "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" (1.2/4 in 18-49, 4.3 million viewers overall) did not affect the comedies airing behind it. "The Goldbergs" held steady week to week in 18-49 (1.7/4) while rising a bit in total viewers (to 5.4 million), and "Trophy Wife" edged up in both categories (1.4/4 in 18-49, 4.3 million viewers overall) to a three-week high. Halloween episodes tend to provide a ratings boost to comedies, and the ABC shows may have benefited from a lack of comedy competition for the first time, as Fox pre-empted "New Girl" and "The Mindy Project" for a special "X Factor."
Last night's "Goldbergs" and "Trophy Wife" averaged a 1.55 rating in 18-49, which is nearly 20% better than the 1.3 the net garnered a year ago in the hour (opposite "New Girl" and "Mindy" on Fox) with "Happy Endings" and "Don't Trust the B in Apt. 23."
CW's "The Originals" (0.9/3 in 18-49, 2.0 million viewers overall) and "Supernatural" (1.1/3 in 18-49, 2.2 million viewers overall) matched their week-ago scores in 18-49 while growing in adults 18-34, matching the net's best Tuesday average (1.0/3) in two years. "Originals" saw an especially big boost in early DVR numbers for last week's episode, more than doubling its score among women 18-34. (This may have to do with the fact that it's now going opposite ABC Family's tough "Pretty Little Liars").
Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: NBC, 3.0/8; CBS, 2.5/7; Fox, 1.5/4; Univision, 1.3/3; ABC, 1.2/3; CW, 1.0/3; Telemundo, 0.5/1.
In total viewers: CBS, 15.2 million; NBC, 9.6 million; Fox, 4.8 million; ABC, 4.1 million; Univision, 3.2 million; Telemundo, 1.3 million.
