The workshop, which will help producers and directors pitch projects, will be hosted in Barcelona from Oct. 25-27. While EWA aims to create more opportunities for women in film, TV, games and online media, the event is open to both men and women.
European Women's Audiovisual Network is headed by Spanish director Isabel Coixet, with a mandate to nurture more femme directors and up the overall representation of women in the industry.
Pitching trainer Jan Miller will run the event, while Francine H. Raveney, a co-production project analyst, will talk about co-prods. On the final day of the course, pitches will be analyzed by industry vets, including producer Fabien Westerhoff, producer Gavin Humphries ("The Real Social Network"), U.K. packaging pro Josephine Rose and the head of the Turkish Producers Assn., Zeynep Ozbatur.
"Every time I teach in a film school I face the same challenge: how to teach girls to believe they really can be film directors, when I know it is going to be much more difficult for them then for boys," Coixet said. "I always use a very graphic example: the film industry is like a rocky mountain; boys climb with boots and sticks, girls must climb naked except for a pair of really high heels and suitcase full of stones."
