MACAU -- Sticky sweet romance "Barfi!" was the big winner on Saturday night at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards.
At a glitzy ceremony at the Cotai Arena in Macau, the Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra-starrer picked up top awards including best film and best director for its helmer Anurag Basu.
Hrithik Roshan, and "Vicky Donor," a comedy romance on the none-too-obvious subject of sperm donation, which claimed many of the best newcomer awards.
The awards ceremony, which ran on till 2am in the morning, is designed to be a massive celebration of all-things Bollywood and was the finale of a weekend of complementary events.
Organizers revealed that the IIFA Weekend will next year land in Tampa Bay, Florida.
Operating from a 40 metre stage, the Saturday show included running gags about a wannabe presenter, endless pratfalls and half a dozen song and dance routines involving up to 50 dancers. Featuring A-list star Deepika Padukone, newcomer Parineeti Chopra, and older Bollywood favorites Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit, the dance performances were arranged by the "in" choreographer and director Remo d'Souza.
The evening also involved considerable self-deprecation from the co-host Shah Rukh Khan, who made light of a shoulder injury that necessitated him wearing an over-sized metal sling and greeting guests with awkward left-handed handshakes. Khan arrived on stage with a quartet of sexy nurses and later ambled though a dance routine with his own body double.
As well as the usual performance awards, the ceremony included a 'humanity award' for Dia Mirza; 'Outstanding Achievement by an Indian in International Cinema' award to Anupam Kher ("Silver Linings Playbook," "Lust, Caution") presented by Jean Claude van Damme; and for 'Outstanding Contribution' to lyricist and scriptwriter Javed Akhtar.
Shah Rukh Khan was also named 'Digital Star of the Year' for having the biggest following on social media.
