We're not surprised to find the kosher chain, with New York locations, operating in South Florida. The restaurant delivers on its motto, "The Taste of New York" with a big menu and matching big portions.

We barely sit down when a chilled bowl containing creamy slaw and another container of large crunchy sour and half-sour pickles arrives. There's also a basket of soft rye bread slices baked on the premises.

We dig in while waiting for our main courses. Chicken in the pot with kreplach, matzo ball, noodles, peas and carrots is one option on the special menu.

But we choose two hearty slabs of meat loaf that have plenty of beef without a lot of filler. A rich, smooth brown gravy is on top. The meal comes with mashed potatoes and golden corn kernels. We like that there are small lumps in the white swirl of spuds. It gives the side some character.

We also sample the corned beef (Ben's cures its own) that is also a winner. A heaping helping rests on a large slab of boiled cabbage. The beef is good on its own, but we can't resist several squirts from a plastic bottle of Hebrew National Deli mustard to give it an extra kick.

The corned beef melts in our mouths. There's also a nice-sized potato and a peeled carrot, both boiled to perfection and easily cut with a fork.

We're told by restaurant workers the corned beef and meat loaf are available only on this special menu; the chicken in the pot costs $15.99 on the regular menu. — Beth Feinstein Bartl
